Nash Ward - Psychiatric Intensive Care (PICU)

Nash Ward is often the first step of a seamless pathway for males that offers value for money, high quality acute care. Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help people regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and return home.

Accommodation is provided in en-suite rooms on a single sex ward. We offer ward-based activities for those too unwell to access the hospital's considerable grounds or to be granted S17 leave, as well as access the hospital's gym, kitchen facilities and IT suite.

Admission Criteria

We accept service users who are:

  • 18 or over
  • Male
  • Detained under an appropriate Section of the Mental Health Act / Order (we are unable to admit service users on Section 4, 5/2, 5/4 or 136), including forensic sections and those under restriction orders
  • Experiencing difficulties which affect their wellbeing, or that of others, and which can't be assessed or treated safely in an open acute inpatient facility
  • At risk of aggression, absconding, suicide or vulnerability (for example, because they are sexually uninhibited or overactive) - because of a serious mental disorder (personality disordered service users will not be excluded from this service)

We are often able to help with transportation of the service user if this is a problem for the referrer. Please let us know at the time of referral and we will make arrangements using our company vehicles and experienced staff team.

Our expert teams will undertake a risk assessment as soon as possible, based on current circumstances and past history, and provide a decision within one hour of receiving all relevant information as to whether we can help. Once a service user is admitted, we work alongside them to develop the best plan of care and treatment. We guarantee to update the referring team in writing on a weekly basis about the progress of their service user; we also welcome visits or update enquiries via the telephone or email to the ward should this be helpful.

For more information, or to make a referral, please call us on 01934 428 989.

  • Quick assessments and transportation enables immediate access to services.
