Service User Involvement

Cygnet Lodge Westlands is dedicated to promoting Service User involvement in the delivery of care in our services. To achieve this we encourage our service users to work with us to decide how we manage and develop our services. We have monthly meetings where a service user representative can feedback any issues or suggestions they have to all disciplines in the lodge, including house keeping, maintenance, chef, nursing staff and the occupational therapy department.

Service Users are encouraged to actively participate in areas of service development which include:

  • Clinical Audit
  • Care Planning Development
  • Recovery Star Champion
  • Weekly Menu planning

Service users have previously also been involved in the recruitment of clinical staff, which included being a part of the interview panels.

Through Service User Questionnaires, which are completed by service users on a monthly basis, we have been able to identify that service users found the admission process particularly difficult, due to change and the unknown. Through a forum we then looked at how this experience could be improved.

As a result service users began leading talks, both individually and within a group, to explore their experiences of Westlands with prospective service users, in order to relieve any fears they might have or answer any questions. Along with this approach, service users have also created a folder which can be taken by staff to assessments of prospective service users to enable them to have a visual idea of what Westlands is like.

More recently the service users have created a monthly newsletter, which involves both service user and staff input.
