Group Therapy Department

Our Group Therapy Department for day patients and inpatients is run by Karen Ireland, Therapy Manager and Gayle Hazzard, Group Co-ordinator. The therapy department runs a structured weekly programme from Monday to Friday with D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) planned activities over a weekend. Karen and Gayle work closely with the nursing staff to provide the therapy groups which enables the care we offer to fit individual needs.

Examples of some of the groups available include:

  • Behavioural Therapy
  • CBT Skills
  • Coping Skills
  • Managing Recovery
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Self Awareness

Topics that are frequently discussed in these groups sessions include the following:

  • Assertiveness - Identifying different behaviour types and learning techniques for assertiveness
  • Anxiety management - Recognising how we become enmeshed in high achievement aspirations and ignore some negative and destructive consequences to ourselves.
  • Managing feelings of anger - Recognising the destructive ways in which we deal with anger.
  • Realistic thinking - Looking at ways to avoid always focusing on the negative side of a situation.

Aftercare Support

Upon discharge aftercare support is provided by our therapy team either by telephone, via one-to-one sessions or through continued group work. The type of support offered can be discussed prior to discharge.

Relatives and Carers Support Sessions

In addition to running groups for inpatients and day patients Karen and Gayle also run support sessions for relatives and carers. The aim of these sessions is to allow relatives and carers to feel supported, be fully informed and have time to talk together about their experiences and feelings in a safe and informal environment.
