Therapy Department

Our multi-disciplinary team approach allows us to provide a fully focused structured activity programme on a daily basis. We provide 1:1 and group Art Therapy and Music Therapy delivered by trained professionals, as well as having interventions led by the psychology team.


Cygnet Lodge Brighouse is keen to ensure all service users are offered over 25 hours of therapy or activities per week. We provide bespoke packages of care to individual service users ensuring they have regular meaningful activities on a weekly basis. Service users are given an individualised activity planner and are monitored with the amount of activities they attend. Each service user at Cygnet Lodge Brighouse is offered on average 55.3 hours of meaningful activities and therapies per week. This can include the following:

  • Tai-Chi
  • Dog walking and pet therapy
  • Community meetings and morning planning meetings
  • Daily cooking sessions in the ADL kitchen
  • Snooker club
  • Close links with the local college
  • Voluntary work in local charity shops, on conservation projects, in cafes and tea rooms
  • Gardening and allotment groups
  • Community Meeting
  • Service User Involvement Group

Occupational Therapy

The OT service at Cygnet Lodge Brighouse focuses on a service user centered approach whereby the service user is involved in planning their goals with the therapist. We also believe that each service user is unique and because of this fundamental belief we are able to offer a holistic rehabilitation approach, which is dedicated and committed to promoting independence, autonomy and empowerment.

Psychological Therapy

Our psychologists complete risk, personality and neuropsychological assessments with patients using standardised assessment methods, including the HCR-20, RSVP, PCL-R, IPDE, MCMI-III, WAIS-III, BADS, WMS-II, W-TAR. The results of these assessments are shared with patients and staff and recommendations are made for management and treatment.

In addition they complete individual and group interventions with patients, working on issues such as offending behaviour, anger management, psychosis, depression, anxiety, social skills, self-esteem, relaxation, and so on. A variety of psychological approaches are employed, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy, Mindfulness and Motivational Interviewing.

Groups

We offer the following intensive educational groups:

  • Social skills Group: Intervention only group delivered by a Psychologist and therapy team, focusing on developing service user’s confidence and abilities.
  • Psycho-educational Group: This is a group which is delivered by a nursing team looking at a variety of issues including mental health awareness and psycho social interventions to help ensure service users stay well when in the community.
  • Recovery Model Group: Delivered by a team of nurses aiming to promote and improve well being helping service users develop on their journey, encompassing the Recovery Star.
  • Substance Misuse Course: This is a rolling 16 week programme to bring abstinence to service users substance misuse problems. Using Motivational Interviewing techniques the nursing team provide education and motivation to change.
  • Back To Work Group: Delivered by the Occupational Therapy team and Social Work department this group provides service users with the skills and opportunities to return to gainful employment. The group looks at basic skills of ‘how to apply for jobs’, writing CV’s and interview techniques. The group then collaborates with local organisations to find suitable voluntary work with the aim to move to paid employment.
  • Goals Group: Using cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques this group encourages all service users to strive to achieve a specific, achievable outcome for the week to help benefit and aid there recovery process.
  • Creative Writing Group: This group offers service users the chance to work is a supported relaxed session and create work that they want to share within the group. The facilitator will introduce a theme each week and provide inspiration.
  • Arts and Crafts Group: An open group which encourages service users to express themselves using a variety of skills and materials.
  • Healthy Living Group: Dietician led group focusing on nutrition and exercise giving service users the opportunity to bring recipes for planned cooking sessions which service users will be doing two to three times per week.
  • Current Affairs Group: The aim of this group is to offer a relaxing environment to the service users whereby they are able to discuss the current affairs in a structured and supported setting.
  • Lunch Group: The purpose of this lunch club is to promote community integration and to help the service users to understand cultural and social norms and engage with their fellow peers.
  • Health & Group: This session is open to all service users - it promotes health and well being.
