Psychological Therapy

Our registered forensic psychologist accepts referrals from all wards of the hospital. The forensic psychologist offers specialist assessments with service users in relation to harmful behaviours, for example aggressive or violent behaviour, fire-setting/arson, sexually harmful behaviour. The behaviour may be currently present or it may be past behaviour that has not yet been addressed/understood and is preventing progress in some way.

The forensic psychologist is able to offer intervention via one to one or group sessions according to the needs identified through appropriate assessment. The most likely overarching aim of forensic psychology intervention is to reduce the frequency and/or intensity of the presenting harmful behaviour and /or to reduce the risk of the service user behaving in harmful ways in the future. Intervention may also involve advice and consultation to nursing and/or other therapy staff who are already involved in intervention with the service user.

The forensic psychologist also takes a lead role in the delivery of the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Skills Training group that is delivered on Moorside and Bowling wards. The forensic psychologist is one of the trained facilitators of the DBT skills group and also facilitates the DBT Consult Supervision Group for all DBT skills facilitators across the hospital.

All members of the therapy team are represented and provide reports for CPA meetings and Managers Review of Detention/Tribunal Hearings.
