Bowling Ward: Open Female Personality Disorder Service

Bowling Ward provides specialist DBT services for women with a diagnosis of personality disorder. The ward exists as part of a care pathway including our female PICU ward, Denholme Ward, and the low secure personality disorder service on Moorside Ward, with which it shares a care programme and philosophy, and also the rehabilitation service at Cygnet Lodge Brighouse.

Care on Bowling is provided for service users who do not require a secure care setting and may be informal or detained under the Mental Health Act.

Therapy

DBT is the main therapy used on the ward and the programme lasts approximately 12 months. Other structured interventions are used to support service users who are initially less motivated to move through the care pathway. Trauma focused interventions such as EMDR are also provided for those service users who require issues of abuse or other trauma to be looked at.

DBT therapy is provided in a group setting and also individually for those for whom this is more helpful. Skills training and Mindfulness work is also carried out. Service users are cared for in a highly structured environment and have a ward therapy programme alongside a personal programme.

Service User Involvement

The service users in our personality disorder service are extensively involved in the regional and national service user development programmes and the hospital is at the forefront of this regionally. Read more about out approach to service user involvement.
