Children on climbing frameRegistered with OFSTED, the Cygnet Springside Short Break Service provides specialist support for young people aged 5 -17 with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. The service provides excellent opportunities for individual development in a tailored residential setting for an agreed number of nights per month; usually between 2 nights per month (to ensure consistent working) up to a maximum of 2 nights per week. (For those requiring a higher level of support, Cygnet Springside has a shared care residential service to provide between 2 and 5 nights per week.)

Service Aims and Ethos

This highly proactive and structured service provides person-centred, tailored packages of care designed to maximise and attain future potentials for young people. The short break service can also be utilised to aid transition into the shared care service or other placements as required.

Cygnet Springside supports young people to achieve the “Every Child Matters” 5 outcomes for children.

Assessment and Ongoing Support

The service offers an in depth assessment package that is tailored to meet the needs of the individual with autism, accounting for the length of time needed to settle into any new placement and to meet new peers. During the assessment an appropriate peer group is identified for the individual to ensure all short breaks are a positive, safe and enjoyable experience for the individual and the family. Comprehensive care plans, behaviour support plans and risk assessments are also formulated prior to formal admission to the service, in collaboration with parents, carers and educationalists. These form the basis for support, identifying short-, mid- and long-term aims and determining areas for ‘direct work’ with individuals.

Partnership Working

The service works in partnership with parents, carers, families, social workers, educationalists and any other individuals or professionals involved in a young person’s life. This affords for a truly multi-disciplinary, consistent and holistic approach to enable each young person to reach their potentials and future aspirations.
