Registered with OFSTED, the Cygnet Springside Shared Care Service provides intensive packages of specialist support for young people aged 5 -17 with autism and Asperger’s syndrome. The service meets the needs of young people who require bespoke and intensive packages of care and who still spend some quality time living at home. This means they usually spend between 2 and 5 nights per week at Springside; this will usually be the same nights each week to afford for essential predictability and structure. The service provides a tailored residential environment designed to reflect a home setting. (For those who do not require such a high level of support, Cygnet Springside has a short break residential service to provide between 2 nights a month and 2 nights a week.)
Service Aims and Ethos
The shared care service is designed to assess individual young people’s potentials and via structured and intensive care and support, maximise their life outcomes. Given the nature of autistic spectrum conditions, much direct work is undertaken in relation to the development of social and life skills; young people are also supported in managing behaviours which may otherwise impede their social development.
Cygnet Springside supports young people to achieve the “Every Child Matters” 5 outcomes for children.
Assessment and Ongoing Support
The service offers an in depth assessment package that is tailored to meet the needs of the individual with Autism, accounting for the length of time needed to settle into any new placement and to meet new peers. During the assessment an appropriate peer group is identified for the individual to ensure all stays are a positive, safe and enjoyable experience for the individual and the family. The shared care service allows for a comprehensive transition package to be identified in order to ensure the individual is able to access appropriate future services and realistic adult placements. Comprehensive care plans, behaviour support plans and risk assessments are also formulated prior to formal admission to the service, in collaboration with parents, carers and educationalists. These form the basis for support, identifying short-, mid- and long-term aims and determining areas for ‘direct work’ with individuals.
Partnership Working
The service works in partnership with parents, carers, families, social workers, educationalists and any other individuals or professionals involved in a young person’s life. This affords for a truly multi-disciplinary, consistent and holistic approach to enable each young person to reach their potentials and future aspirations. Cygnet Springside promotes optimum levels of independence, relative to each individual. As such the service also supports young people when new, additional external services may be required such as employment support or supported living in order to facilitate a seamless transition into adulthood.
