Autism Step Down Service

The Springs Wing is a 10-bed step down unit at Cygnet Hospital Harrow. The wing is for adult males with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism requiring intensive rehabilitation to optimise their ability to function in the community independently.

The service is also used as a 'move on facility' for patients currently on the secure Springs Unit, also at Harrow, to facilitate their transition to more independent living. Suitable service users from other services NHS or Independent providers or direct from the community are also accepted.

The service is staffed 24hrs a day, 7-days a week. Care will be delivered by an experienced multi disciplinary team.

Admission Criteria

The service user group for the Springs Wing is low risk with varying functional needs.

The wing is for males between the age of 18 and 65 years old who have a diagnosis of AS or HFA ( there will be some flexibility regarding the definitive diagnosis as diagnostic confirmation will be part of the role of the service).

  • Prospective service users may also have complex mental health needs however their risk profile must be low.
  • There may be a forensic history.
  • They may be detained under the MHA or informal / voluntary status.
  • They would be service users that would benefit from a structured, intensive rehabilitation programme.
  • Service users must also have motivation and the commitment to move to more independence in the community. However it is recognised that a balance between hope and realism in terms of their expectations for their future is necessary.
