08 September 2011:
Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke extends care pathway by opening new transitional service for women

We are pleased to announce that Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke will shortly be opening a new Low Secure rehabilitation service for women. The new transitional service, based on Knightstone Ward, is aimed at those women who are already engaged in treatment, and actively working towards moving out of secure services to supported or independent living in the future. The new service means that Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke will be able to offer a comprehensive, recovery-focussed, rehabilitation care pathway exclusively for female service users.

  • More information about our female care pathway can be found here.

Our care and treatment is already based on a recovery and user-centred approach. Service users in the new service will be supported to achieve positive personal outcomes, increase pro-social behaviours, reduce risk and improve their access to the community.

Treatment programmes will facilitate skills development and the therapeutic activities are underpinned by the principal of cognitive behavioural, creative and psychodynamic therapy in an environment where secure professional relationships empower engagement and exploration of the salient aspects of women's lives. In addition the existing Drug and Alcohol service at Kewstoke offers a specialist service to the women, taking into account their bio-psycho-social patterns of behaviour, which often differ considerably from their male counterparts.

Our informed gender practice will be based on:

  • Staff learning from the life stories of the women's experiences
  • The team valuing the services user's strengths and resilience
  • The staff attempting to shift the focus away from diagnoses and problems towards hopes about the individual's future
  • Validating the service user's choices and experiences that help her find a pathway through services to supported living that works for her
  • Providing opportunities for women via the Kewstoke social enterprise project to experience employment and practice new skills
  • The team ensuring that service user feedback informs the development of the service

Whichever pathway service users come from our emphasis lies in moving service users in, through and out of the service and wherever possible onwards to less secure conditions. Progress will be measured by patient portfolio, joint care plan and service user-led CPA and the three main outcome measures to be utilised will be HoNOS Secure, EssenCES and Recovery Star.

The new service opens on Monday 10th October 2011 and we are now taking referrals. To discuss any of the services that Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke provides, arrange an informal visit or to make a referral please contact Ruth Halsey, Clinical Manager, on 01934 428989 or ruthhalsey@cygnethealth.co.uk.
