Cygnet Health Care Ltd has announced plans to add a further 60 Medium and Low Secure beds to our existing specialised mental health services in the South West of England.
This exciting new £17m development is the conclusion to encouraging consultation with the local health care economy stakeholders, commissioners and purchasers and will meet specified needs that exist within the region.
Subject to ongoing discussions with the local stakeholders, the hospital will provide secure services for women with complex mental health needs and men with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours.
Construction of the hospital is expected to commence in the latter part of 2010 with registration and opening anticipated late 2011. The hospital will be a purpose-built, single storey facility set in 3.5 acres.
The hospital will be situated on the outskirts of Bridgwater in Somerset and will be contemporary and sustainable in design and function. Both the interior and exterior specifications of the building will meet all standards relating to medium and low secure hospitals. Additionally, aspects of care relating to privacy and dignity were also considered in the design of the building.
The building will feature spacious ward accommodation with very large garden areas. There will be a well-appointed therapy area that will allow metalwork, woodwork, art and crafts, a cinema, an Activity of Daily Living kitchen and a gym / exercise area. We will provide a range of therapeutic interventions including occupational therapy, psychology, arts therapies, fitness instruction, teaching and speech and language therapy. Patients will also have access to a separate multi-gym, cafeteria, horticultural centre and sports pitch.
The medium and low secure services provided by Cygnet Hospital Bridgwater will complement the existing and established low secure facilities currently provided by Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke near Weston-super-Mare. Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke will be opening a 12-bed step-down unit in April 2010.
