About the conference

Contrary to impressions created by inappropriate media reporting, most people with a mental disorder are not a danger to others. For the minority who are, it is important that the mental health services, the police, probation and the courts work together to ensure the safety of patients, their families, staff and the public.

This event brings together experts and practitioners who will describe best practice to achieve this objective. The event will be of relevance to mental health professionals, probation officers, prison health care staff and police liaison officers.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the size of the problem of assaults by people with a mental disorder
  • Understand the human and financial cost of assaults by people with a mental disorder
  • Learn about best practice in collaboration between the police and mental health services in responding to assaults by people with mental disorder
  • Understand how agencies can work together to manage the risks posed by people with mental disorder in the community
  • Learn about the current position on treatment of people with personality disorders in the health services and criminal justice system
  • Find out about the concerns that judges have when sentencing people with a mental disorder
